Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)*

Why are polyurethanes not as popular as thermoplastics?

The market for polyurethanes is a specific market destined for professional producers. The consumers seldom buy the polyurethane products directly. However, polyurethanes can be found in many of the end products being sold in the market, from kitchen utensils to urban equipment, and from automobiles to office furniture.

Is it difficult to design products that will use RIM polyurethane technology?

For industrial designers with a knowledge of thermoplastics design it will be easy to "migrate" to design in polyurethanes. PURMOLD provides technical assistance to industrial designers who wish to optimise their projects with the use of polyurethane systems.

How expensive is the production of polyurethane parts?

The price for complex designs is often highly competitive when compared with that of the traditional materials for production series above 100 parts, and with molded thermoplastics for series between 100 to 5000 parts.
This is due to the fact that polyurethane molds cost between 10 percent to 20 percent of the total costs of thermoplastic moulds.

Are polyurethane parts mechanically resistant to impact?

Yes. Rigid foam polyurethane with density of 0,6 has a medium resistance to impact, but rigid solid polyurethane has the same impact resistance as thermoplastics.
The elastomeric solid polyurethane is the one with the highest impact resistance levels, able to sustain high impacts. These systems are used in parts exposed to considerable mechanical stress, such as anti-vandalism equipment.

Are the dimensional tolerances low or high?

The dimensional tolerances of polyurethanes are equivalent to the tolerances of thermoplastics, allowing for accurate control of binding and assembly systems.

How do surface paint applications work and look in polyurethane parts?

The polyurethane adhesion to the paint is excellent.
The parts can be painted with high standard two component paints, from mate to high gloss.

Is it possible to insert materials inside the polyurethane (e.g. inner-structures)?

Yes. It is possible, and many times desirable, to insert other materials inside polyurethane parts. The main reasons to insert other material inside the polyurethane (moulding inserts) are the following:
When it is necessary to increase the mechanical resistance (e.g. inserting steel structures);
When it is necessary to save material, replacing the polyurethane by a cheaper inserted material;
When it is necessary to reduce the overall weight of the part, inserting lighter materials.

Is it possible to fit metallic threaded inserts?

Yes. Inserts have an external thread that binds strongly to the polyurethane part and resists to high tension forces.

Is it possible to fit screws in the polyurethane?

Yes. Self tapping screws for permanent fitting are available whenever it is necessary to unscrew several times. Threaded inserts must be fitted.
